My wife was called a mule for being childless

August 05, 2025

Dear Pastor,

I am having a problem. I am 33 years old and I am married. I got married when I was 30 years old. During the first year of my marriage, my wife and I decided that we would not try to have a child. We wanted to spend the first year without having the burden of becoming parents.

We also wanted to buy furniture and appliances for the house that we rented. We also needed to clear up the debt that we incurred as a result of the wedding.

After the year expired, my wife and I tried to have a child but nothing has happened. People began asking us why we did not have a child as yet. Some people always ask us what is happening.

We have been to doctors and we were told that nothing is wrong. I got myself checked out and my doctor told me that I should just relax. My wife was also told that she should just go ahead and enjoy me until the time comes.

My wife is wondering whether she is barren. She had a fuss at her workplace with a female who called her a mule. My wife did not want to go to work because the comment affected her.

My wife has now said that we should consider adopting a baby. That is not something that we considered when we got married.

In addition to adopting a child, my wife wants to change jobs because she does not want to continue working in a place where she was called a mule.

What advice could you give us?

Initial Withheld

Dear Writer,

I will repeat a story of a couple I have known for many years. When I was living in the state of Michigan, in the United States of America, a friend and his wife were married for many years and they were childless. They sought medical help and the doctor told my friend's wife that she will never become pregnant.

After hearing the sad news, they adopted a baby boy and even called him Junior. She took her young baby to church and everybody was excited. Well, she started to care for the little baby and then one month she missed her period and she wondered what in the world was happening. When she went to the doctor she was told that she was pregnant.

They ended up having three more children.

I will tell you one more story.

A couple came from Canada and was assisting me here at First Baptist Church. They were married for about 12 years, and the man and his wife were determined that they were not going to adopt. After 12 years, the woman became pregnant and she became the mother of three sons.

Sometimes we have to learn to wait on the Lord. I say to you, enjoy your wife. Comfort her. I am not against adoption, but in my opinion, it is too early to go that route.
