Visit by JLP’s Donovan Williams to polling stations in Kingston Central upsets some PNP workers
The presence of Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) candidate for Kingston Central Donovan Williams inside polling stations at Kingston Technical High School (KTHS) caused a stir among People's National Party (PNP) election day workers workers stationed outside on Wednesday morning.
Agitated PNP workers tried to get police personnel at the school to bar Williams from entering, claiming that his presence there was a breach of the electoral law.
"It nah happen this time," one angry PNP worker charged while glaring at Williams.
The JLP candidate did not respond.
However, a senior police officer, citing the Representation of the People Act, explained to the PNP workers that they were mistaken.
The senior cop said that, by law, political candidates are allowed five minutes inside each polling station.
There are eight polling stations at KTHS.
The senior cop indicated to the agitated PNP workers that a constable was assigned to time Williams.
The JLP candidate left the venue nearly 20 minutes after he arrived.
He initially agreed to an interview with The Gleaner, but left without answering any questions.
The PNP workers took no issue with the presence of United Independent Congress candidate Garth Barnett being on the compound of KTHS.
