McCalla hoping to lead Mt Pleasant to regional success

August 19, 2025

Mount Pleasant Football Academy's Sue-Lae McCalla said he is well aware of the importance of his role as team captain as he prepares to lead his team in their opening game of the Concacaf Caribbean Cup against SV Robinhood today.

Mount Pleasant will open their campaign against the Surinamese giants at the National Stadium, with kick-off set for 7 p.m.

The experienced McCalla says he is well aware of the importance of today's fixture, but he will be approaching the game just like any other, with the responsibility of keeping his teammates focused on the task at hand.

"It's nothing different. It's just to keep the players focused, having the right mindset and to give them all the confidence and the motivation going forward. It will be very important for us to go all the way," he said.

Mount Pleasant will be looking to earn their first-ever qualification to the Concacaf Champions Cup.

After being eliminated at the first round last year, head coach Theodore 'Tappa' Whitmore said his players are ready to achieve the club's ambitions.

"I think, the last tournament that we competed in, we weren't prepared. We are now prepared for this tournament and it will come down to execution, and the players have been working hard over the past few weeks," Whitmore said.

"This is our moment that we have been waiting for and, again, it is what takes place out there over the 90 minutes."

UNDERSTAND IMPORTANCE

McCalla echoed his coach's words, as he said all the players understand the importance of a strong performance in the competition.

"I think the players understand, and, as the coach said, the players are upbeat and ready, so it is not difficult for me to get the message across because they already understand," McCalla explained.

"As I've said before, they understand the level where we want to be as a club, so the transition is very easy. A lot of the players have played in this competition before, so it is nothing new for most of them."

Jamaica will open their campaign in Group A against SV Robinhood at home, before travelling to the Dominican Republic to take on Moca FC on August 27.

Their third match of the group will see them travel to take on Central FC of Trinidad and Tobago on September 23, before closing out their group stage matches at home against O&M FC on September 30.
