Defending champions Corinaldi Avenue Primary School won the season-opening rally of the St James Municipal Primary Netball Rally at Montego Bay Boys' and Girls' Club.

The rally, contested by eight teams, was played in a round-robin format. Four of the teams did not show up for the Friday rally, but they are expected to join the competition.

Gina Haughton, president of the St James Netball Association, says she is excited about the competitive spirit.

"I am expecting a good final based on the teams that I saw in the rally. There are four strong teams I have seen so far. I know for competitions, teams always pick up and improve to advance,"Haughton told STAR Sports.

"I don't know if we are going to have an upset in the finals or if the defending champions will retain the championship, but there are strong teams playing," she added.

According to Haughton, 12 teams have registered for the competition.

"Maldon Primary is our newest member on board. I am anticipating a very good turnout with coaches and their players coming out to execute different game plans. There are some experienced players who do not only have the skills, they are also aware of the rules so we are looking to see who will outshine the other," Haughton said.

Corinaldi, 18-time consecutive champions, edged out Flankers Primary 3-2 in the final match at the rally.

Winning coach Omroy Kerr is confident the team will win again this year.

"I am sure it won't be an upset; it will be 19 consecutive titles for us," Kerr declared. "We can't run away from competition and I love that the competition is getting stronger because too often we win easily.

"Flankers coming in with a strong team this year is good for the sport and I like it. Whatever happens, we will be comfortable," Kerr added.

Meanwhile Malik Gordon, coach of second-place rally team Flankers Primary, said despite being out of the competition for a while they are strong candidates to win it all.

"I believe this year will be an upset, we will take home the trophy this year," Gordon said. "Our team is one of the favourites to win the competition, I have faith in my girls," he said.

"With the team that we have, we will take this one home for Flankers. They are putting in the work. As the competition progresses, we will have more time to train and work on the weaknesses that we showed," he added.

The competition continues on Tuesday, May 13 at 10 a.m. at the Montego Bay Boys' and Girls' Club with Barracks Road Primary versus Maldon Primary, and Chetwood Memorial going up against Mount Salem Primary.
