A morning routine that spanned decades ended in tragedy on Wednesday morning when 73-year-old Victor McCalla, of Allman Town, was fatally struck by a truck while transporting water on his bicycle near Heroes Circle in Kingston.

McCalla, a familiar face in his community, had reportedly gone to buy water, something his neighbours and co-workers said he had done faithfully for more than 40 years. Residents of described him as dependable, gentle, and deeply loved.

"Mi know him fi over 40 years now and is the same routine every day, him ride out fi go buy water," one neighbour, shaken by the news, told THE STAR.

His landlord, Veronica, said she only caught a glimpse of him leaving the yard earlier in the morning. Fighting back tears, she recalled, "Mi never even get fi talk to him... mi just see him ride out."

Reports are that McCalla was riding across the busy intersection across from Crab Circle, opposite the Ministry of Education when he was struck and crushed by the truck.

As of July 25, Jamaica had recorded 223 road deaths from 192 fatal collisions, representing a four per cent increase when compared to the same period in 2024.
