Cornwall pleased with 6-0 start
Although they registered an emphatic victory over Green Pond High School in their opening game in the ISSA daCosta Cup football competition , Cornwall College's head coach Hector Wright says there is still room for improvement.
The Zone A match was played at the Cornwall College's playing field on Saturday.
"Scoring six goals in your first game is always a plus. The first game of the season is always good to get off the mark. There was a little tension but the guys managed to pull it off," said Wright.
He also emphasised the need for better strategic play in future games.
"I think in the first half, they needed to be a little more patient, allow the game to come to you, and I think that would have made a difference in the first half," Wright, noted.
He said the attackers needed to display more aggression in the penalty box.
Cornwall opened the scoring when Nickane Brown fired past Green Pond's goalkeeper, Antwun Findlater, in the eighth minute.
After having multiple shot attempts and near-goal opportunities, Cornwall's Carlondo Morris' efforts finally paid off in the 42nd minute, when he doubled the scoreline. Morris would again hit the mark, scoring at the 81st and 90-plus minutes to complete his hat-trick, in a second half loaded with goals.
Mekhi Foster, with a brilliant play, added to the tally in the 58th minute.
The could have widened the margin shortly after when presented with an empty goal. Morris made two attempts, but Green Pond defender Clevelon Berry made two huge blocks to deny another goal.
However, that was not enough to prevent Cornwall from adding to their tally. Miguel Arnold assisted on a beautiful goal with some wonderful play from the side of the pitch, before crossing for Shevaun Brown to score in the 70th minute.
Green Pond's head coach, Gregory Daley, attributed the rough start to inadequate preparation.
"It is disappointing," he said of the result. "But it was always going to be difficult with our preparation. When our team is unfit, it is always going to be difficult," said Daley.
"The first goal kind of threw us off, but we should have picked ourselves up a lot quicker," he added. "I know these boys can play, so we have to go back to the drawing board."
