The clash between Edwin Allen’s Kevona Davis and Hydel High School’s Ashanti Moore is building up to be the main highlight of this year’s ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys and Girls’ Athletics Championships.

Davis, the Class Two sprint double champion, is looking two dethrone Moore, who won the 100 and 200 metres in Class One last year.

Davis, whose season was cut short late last year due to an injury concern, opened up her season in style on grass at the STETHS Invitational Meet in late January after posting an impressive 22.86 seconds, and followed that up with a record run of 23.30 seconds at the Central Championships. In her only 100 metres outing this season at the Ben Francis Invitational Meet running against a gale-force wind, she clocked 12.08 seconds.

Davis has an impressive record at Champs as her only defeat came in Class Four when she lost both sprints to St Jago High’s, Joanna Reid. “I am not nervou,s and has no fear competing in Class One for the first time ... I am just going to Champs to do my best, “she said, when asked if she is looking forward to the clash with the defending champion. “I am just going there very focused to run my race and do my best, and not concentrating on anyone else.”

Asked about her brilliant sub-23 seconds at the STETHS Invitational Meet in January, she stated that she was shocked with the fast time.” I could not believe that I ran that fast because I eased up towards the end of the race, but that put me in good stead for the remainder of the season, and I am confident on winning both the 100 and 200 metres at Champs like I did last year,” she stated.

She still has a little concern about her start.” At Central Championships, I was very slow out of the blocks, but I was still able to win easily, but I still have work to do here ... it is a work in progress for me, and as an athlete you will never have things perfect so I will continue to work hard on this aspect,” Davis said.

Going into Champs, she is not focusing on any time in both her events. “I am not really thinking on any time I want to run going into Champs, as I just want to remain healthy and injury-free and win my individual events, along with the relay to help my team to victory,” Davis explained. “We have a strong group of girls here, and whenever I get the baton then everyone have the confidence that I will give them the lead; and if there is any mishap, which I do not foresee, they have confidence in me that I can bring back the team in front.”
