Reggae Boyz put four past Bermuda
Jamaica regained control of Group B of the Concacaf World Cup Qualifying final round, after a resounding 4-0 win over bottom-of-the-table Bermuda at the National Stadium last night.
A Bermuda own goal after 24 minutes, plus strikes from Bobby Reid (26th), Shamar Nicholson (35th) and Dujuan Richards (76th) saw the Reggae Boyz to a comfortable victory.
The win re-established Jamaica back at the top of the group with nine points from four games, one more than Curacao and four ahead of Trinidad and Tobago. Curacao and Trinidad and Tobago drew 1-1 in their match yesterday..
Reggae Boyz coach Steve McClaren said after losing their last game to Curacao, he needed a strong reaction from the team, and he was pleased with the players' response and to be back in charge of the group.
"I think it was a great response from the team. What we want was to be in control of the group and we thank Trinidad for getting a result against Curacao," he stated.
"There is still a lot of work to do but we are pleased with the reaction, pleased with the performance
"This could have easily been a different result so the reaction was the key thing to ensure we won tonight."
Jamaica were off to an electrifying start, forcing the visitors on the defensive from early in the contest.
However, they had to wait until the 24th minute for the breakthrough when Dante Leverock could only redirect Kasey Palmer's pass past his own goalkeeper.
The goal lifted the mood of the team and the fans, who came into the game with a lot of doubt regarding the team's capability. The Boyz quickly added to their lead, as Bobby DeCordova-Reid turned home Renaldo Cephas' cross two minutes later to make it 2-0.
With Bermuda offering very little, Jamaica dictated possession and had a number of other chances to increase their advantage.
They eventually added a third in the 35th minute, thanks to good work from Cephas who picked out Shamar Nicholson and the latter stabbed home from close-range.
Jamaica continued to open their opponents after the break, with Palmer testing goalkeeper Dale Eve with a low shot from 20 yards. Reid then came close with an acrobatic effort soon after, before dragging another effort wide two minutes later.
Richards who came on after 63 minutes, had a great opening three minutes later, but blasted over the top.
Cephas then had a chance denied by Eve at point-blank range, after a patient build-up.
However, Richards would put the icing on the cake after he danced through the Bermuda defence and hammered a low shot past Eve in the 76th minute.
Richards continued to mesmerise the Bermudians in his cameo, setting up Nicholson before rattling the post after some exquisite skills on the ball soon after.
Although disappointed, Bermuda coach Michael Findlay said it's a different level playing against Jamaica.
"Very disappointed. We've struggled to put points on the board. We struggled to put the ball in the net. But to put ourselves in the final 12 (in Concacaf) is something we need to celebrate.
"It's a whole different level for some of these players but it's something to be learning from because these are the games that we want to be playing," he added.
