Jamboree! - GKIA annual kids football tourney set for this weekend
Duhaney Park football field at Baldwin Crescent in the community will comes alive on Saturday with the third staging of the Great Kinds in Action Football Jamboree, set to start at 10.am.
The event, which has become a staple on the calendar for some of the Corporate Area top clubs and high schools, is expected to generate its usual excitement and competitiveness as it has for the first two years of its existence. Organiser Tynese Miller revealed that this year they have removed the under-15 category and will focus on the younger set of players from under-8 to under-13s.
"This year, we are just doing under-8, under-10 and under-13, so we are sticking more to the younger players. Last year, we had under-15, but this year we will be sticking more with the babies, because we want to focus on the development of the younger ones and encourage their development," she stated.
ONE-DAY STAGING
In its first two stagings, the competition was held for two days but this year Miller said it would only last one day, even though entries have been overwhelming and new teams are still coming in.
"For this year we are looking for more teams to come out (participate). We are looking for a family-oriented day where we can get everybody involved. We have a lot of prizes and surprises, as we want to get other persons involved other than the players,' she said.
"It will be one day and my expectation is for everybody to come out and have a good time. The coaches are looking forward to it and we will have a lot of new teams coming in plus all the old teams. The response has very good and we had to cut off some as we still have people coming in," she said.
Ballaz Academy defeated Dino Strikers for under-8 title last year, Duhaney Park Primary captured the under-10 crown with victory over St Richards Primary, Voodoo All Starz took the under-13 title, after beating Pembroke Hall high, while Jamaica College defeated Excelsior High for the u-15 crown.
Miller, was also very happy to have kept the main sponsors, Probooks, Docutech and Jamaica Computer Society - New York chapter, all on board.
"We could not have done this without them and I just want to big them up," she said.
